In recent years, we’ve seen a powerful shift - more and more Black women and girls are embracing their natural hair. From afros and coils to locs and protective styles, this return to our roots is more than just a trend. It’s a movement. And in a time where visibility, education, and community are everything, natural hair events play a vital role in supporting this journey - and this is why Natural Hair Week (now CURLYTREATS Festival) was born.
Our gatherings offer more than hair tips or product samples. Our create safe spaces. We educate, uplift, and affirm. Whether you’re just starting out or have worn your curls for years, natural hair events remind us that our hair is not a problem to fix — it’s something to be proud of.
Creating space for representation
For decades, Black hair has been overlooked, misunderstood, or misrepresented in the beauty industry. Many of us grew up without seeing our textures celebrated in magazines, on product shelves, or even in our schools and workplaces. Natural hair events like ours change that narrative.
Our spaces are filled with stylists who understand textured hair, brands that create products specifically for us, and speakers who speak from lived experience . Walking into a natural hair event means being seen — without needing to explain yourself or shrink your identity.
Education that empowers
One of the biggest challenges for anyone returning to natural hair is simply knowing what to do. What works for one curl pattern may not work for another. Misinformation is everywhere. And trial and error can get expensive — fast.
That’s where our natural hair events make a real difference. Attendees get access to:
- live product demos that show how ingredients actually perform on natural textures
- panel discussions covering haircare routines, scalp health, and common issues like breakage or hair loss
- trichologists and experts who offer personalised advice and long-term solutions
- workshops on protective styling, moisture retention, DIY treatments, and more
With the right education, people leave not just informed — but empowered to care for their hair in a way that’s healthy and sustainable.
Confidence and community
Wearing your natural hair out in the world can still feel like an act of resistance. Whether it’s dealing with workplace policies, social pressure, or simply navigating hair shrinkage and wash day struggles, it helps to know you’re not alone.
Our ntural hair events build community. We create opportunities to connect with others on the same journey — to share tips, stories, challenges, and wins. There’s nothing like the moment someone sees your twist-out and says, “Sis, what did you use?” That connection matters. And it often turns strangers into friends.
For younger generations, these events are especially powerful. Children and teens get to see role models who look like them — confident, creative, and proud of their roots. That representation plants a seed early, reminding them that their hair is beautiful just as it grows.
Changing beauty standards, one curl at a time
Our atural hair events don’t just benefit the people who attend — we challenge the wider industry. We shine a light on the gaps in mainstream haircare, push for inclusive products, and celebrate styles that were once labelled “unprofessional” or “difficult.”
As more Black women turn to natural, our events serve as a mirror and a megaphone. Wereflect our beauty back to us, loudly and proudly. And we encourage brands, salons, and institutions to do better - to show up, to listen, and to create spaces that serve us all.
The journey continues
Choosing to go natural is personal, powerful, and sometimes complicated. There’s unlearning, relearning, and a lot of deep conditioning along the way. But with the right support, it can also be joyful.
That’s why our natural hair events are essential. We bring us together. They keep us informed. They remind us that our hair is not a trend — it’s a legacy.
Whether you’re just starting your journey or you’ve been rocking your crown for years, know this: there’s a whole community here to walk with you. And we’re just getting started.
Thank you for attending, participating in, and sponsoring our first UK natural hair event series.
