CURLYTREATS Festival delivers an annual event during Black History Month that celebrates Black hair, hairstyles and culture – past and present. It is a grassroots event initiated and managed by Vinna Best. It includes working with activists, afro hair experts and enthusiasts, artists, creators, makers, practitioners and producers to bring a series of engaging, empowering and educational activities to life every October – the theme this year is Black Hair Stories.

Who can apply?

Everyone can apply to be part of our programme; in particular, we’re looking for London-based Black / Mixed Black artists, afro hair experts and enthusiasts, creators, makers, practitioners, producers, researchers, young people, heritage professionals and businesses to submit exciting and new ideas that hold our Black hair and culture in their hearts.

Interactive activities may include but are not limited to afro hair care workshops, black hair history talks, creative workshops (including zine, t-shirt printing, and hair accessory workshops), film screenings, installations, in-conversation sessions, spoken word and more.

To apply, you must be over the age of 18 at any stage of your career, including students. There is no age limit or experience level required to apply apart for haircare and health related educational activities. You must live, work, or study in London or near London.

Although, people of any experience can apply. Please note that if you would like to deliver sessions related to hair care, health and heritage, you must have the necessary experience/qualifications. 

How can I apply?

You can submit multiple activities. Please ensure each activity has a different expression of interest

CURLYTREATS Festival is taking place at NOVOTEL London West Convention Centre on Saturday 15 October 2022.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 14 June 2022, at noon BTS.
